What to Expect in Your First EMDR Session

EMDR has a reputation for being intense, which can make a first session feel intimidating. The reality is usually far gentler than people imagine. Here’s what actually happens so you can arrive feeling informed rather than anxious.

We start with safety, not the hard stuff

Your first session isn’t about diving into painful memories. It’s about building the foundation. We’ll talk through your history, what brings you in, and what you’d like to be different. Then we’ll spend time making sure you have resources to feel steady, calming techniques, grounding skills, and a sense of what to do if emotions rise.

You’ll learn how the bilateral stimulation works

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, usually side-to-side eye movements, sometimes tapping or tones, to help your brain process. I’ll guide you through it gently so you know what it feels like before we ever apply it to anything difficult. Most people are surprised by how natural it feels.

We map what we’ll work on, together

EMDR follows a structured eight-phase protocol. In the early sessions we identify the specific memories, beliefs, or sensations we’ll target. You’ll always know what we’re approaching and why. Nothing happens without your understanding and consent.

You stay in control the whole time

A common fear is that EMDR will drag up more than you can handle. In a well-paced session, that shouldn’t happen. We go as fast as your nervous system allows, and you can pause at any time. You’re not re-experiencing the event, you’re letting your brain reprocess it from a calmer place.

After the session

Some people feel lighter right away; others feel tired or foggy as the brain keeps processing overnight. Both are normal. I’ll give you simple self-care guidance so you know what to expect between sessions, and we’ll check in before moving forward.

The goal isn’t to erase, it’s to release

EMDR doesn’t make the memory disappear. It changes how the memory feels in your body, so it stops hijacking your present. If you’ve been carrying something that won’t loosen its grip, EMDR might be the key. Reach out to learn whether it’s right for you.
